Di ćeš na more?
Taking my vacations in June and September apparently was a reason to get asked the whole bunch of questions. In Croatia, there in a culture of mandatory “going to the coast” during summer and “going to party” for New Year’s Eve. Two most common questions you are going to hear in Croatia are:
- during late spring and early summer: “Di ćeš na more?” which literal translation would be where are you going to the coast or where are you going to spend your summer, and
- during November and December: “Di ćeš za novu?” or where are you going to celebrate New Year’s Eve.
Answering any of those questions with “I’m staying home.” or “I’m not doing anything / going anywhere special.” are socially unacceptable. 😀 I noticed those sad looks when I said I am on my vacations in late June, followed by questions like “So you were not able to take vacations during the summer?”. Uhhmm, I was able to take vacations when I wanted, and late June IS summer.
So, we spent entire summer in Zagreb (and we still do) and you know what? It was fantastic! Summers in Zagreb were always boring, the city was empty and nothing was going on, except construction works. Constructions are still all over the city, but so are festivals, tourists, ice creams and lots more!
Awesome summer activities in Zagreb
Tons of ice cream
First signs of summer brought ice cream to Zagreb. Not so long time ago, Vincek was the only place where you could have an excellent ice cream, but today you will have a hard time deciding where to go and which flavor to choose!
Summer in Zrinjevac
Summer in Zrinjevac is the best thing happened to Zagreb this summer! Loads of happenings, concerts, stand up comedians, good food, and attractive ambient meant this festival would be a huge success.
Beach in Zrinjevac
When summer season started, my Facebook wall was loaded with posts about a beach in Zrinjevac park! They made a real sandy beach, brought colorful beach chairs and organized a book fair. Success!
Hit the real beach
If beach in Zrinjevac was not enough for you, you could hit the real beach! Lakes Jarun and Bundek have their own beaches and you can swim also (I would never do, but you can).
Festival of fireworks in Bundek
For many years already, Bundek is the place to be during fireworks weekend. Concerts, fast food, and 15 minutes long attractive fireworks attract the crowds each year.
Italian food fair on European Square or International food festival on Strossmayer Square, food stands in Zrinjevac park or Strossmayer promenade, does not really matter. Food is cheap and delicious.
Everything is so colorful
The grass was particularly green and flowers so colorful this summer. Well-maintained city parks made Zagreb very attractive and a great background for photos.
Summer open-air cinemas
Several attractive areas in the city during summer transform into open-air cinemas. Starting from Screen on the green in city parks to cinema Tuškanac and on Gradec plateau, warm summer night can be enjoyed while watching movies under the stars.
Open air concerts
Many festivals brought various open air concerts all around the city (Strossmayer promenade, Zrinjevac, Upper town). The crown was 2Cellos free concert in July which attended more than 50 000 people! It was fantastic to lay down on the grass and wait for the concert to begin.
Picnic in Maksimir Park
Maksimir Park is a great destination for a walk, run or bike, but Saturdays from 10 to 5 you can enjoy the real picnic. Beach chairs, picnic baskets and lovely decoration make it the great way how to spend your day off.
For the second time, this summer Upper Town’s fancy courtyards turned into stages and welcomed numerous visitors. Since they are normally closed for public, The courtyards festival was a great opportunity to get to know some hidden gems.
If you are a runner, hot season in Zagreb would definitely be boring for you. There are few adorable races organized: MedvedRUN where the first price was beer, Sljeme mountain marathon or Night marathon where you are running right next to Sava river.
